The hottest gaming franchise Activision is expecting to make it big this holiday season, especially after four previous hits, including the runaway success of last year's 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It seems that the hype surrounding Call of Duty: Black Ops has paid off for Activision. The game launched on November 9th in North America and the U.K. with massive ad campaigns that spread across gaming websites, billboards and television ads. Day one sales for Black Ops totaled 5.6 million copies or $360 million dollars.

These sales figures eclipse last year’s launch of Modern Warefare 2 which sold 4.7 million units within the first 24 hours. Activision is hailing this launch as the “biggest launch in entertainment” surpassing the opening weekend set by the film Avatar last December. Call of Duty: Black Ops appears to have easily surpassed the single-day sales record for any video game set last year by Modern Warfare 2.

According to the first numbers received by VGChartz, over 7 million copies of Black Ops for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC were scooped up yesterday. That would best the number put up by Modern Warfare 2 by around 10%. A staggering 4.5 million Black Ops sales came from pre-orders.
The same estimates suggest the majority of Black Ops sales went to Xbox 360 59%, followed by 36% for PS3 and the rest going to PC, Wii and DS versions.
Activision will likely issue a press release once they have concrete numbers to report on.

"I own an Xbox 360 & C.O.D Black Ops, and when Im online the majority of my friends are always playing this game, not saying that is a bad thing. Its actually why I bought it, 'cause I knew that if I had this game I wouldnt be playing online by myself...
It seems that everyone & their mom is playing this game, & thats how you know a game has done well" -Mjolnir
